On this new album, Liag — after the great sea cliff-sided mountain Slieve Liag — Dermot Byrne, Éamonn Coyne, John Doyle have recorded lesser known local traditional music of, and inspired by, South West Donegal. The recording showcases the special connection they have with the area and its music, and how it remains a source of inspiration to them. Playing there in the late 80’s at small village festivals in Carrick, Kilcar and Glencolmcille has been a cornerstone of their disparate journeys in their musically varied careers.
To say that the music they heard and learnt from the great players of the region — and subsequently recorded in many different line-ups — came partly from those youthful sessions, wouldn’t be a great exaggeration. Year-on-year attendance at lots of festivals in the area cemented their friendship as a trio and the music and song of the area is never very far from their minds; likewise the other life-long friends they made there over the years. Most of the music on this recording is either directly from those great people, and/or their predecessors, or is born of those friendships.
